“I do this I do that” draws its name from a series of poems by Frank O’Hara, whose stream-of-consciousness style captures the poetry embedded in everyday experiences. Inspired by O’Hara’s vivid observations and unfiltered responses to the world around him, this exhibition brings together the works of Abi Birkinshaw, Sam Heath, Luna Sue Huang, Lucile Haefflinger, Frances Stanfield, and Hannah Wilson.

Just as O’Hara’s writing finds meaning in moments that are often overlooked or dismissed as mundane, the artists in this exhibition transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Their work, spanning painting, text, film stills, and observational snapshots, creates an intimate and honest portrait of life as it unfolds. With each piece, they reveal the emotional depth and subtle complexities of seemingly incongruous or trivial moments.

Much like O’Hara’s poetry, this exhibition resists conventional grand narratives. Instead, it embraces the richness of human experience, celebrating the beauty and resonance found in everyday acts and encounters. As Amy Sillman once described Carolee Schneemann’s practice, these works act as “an actual, obdurate recording of the real.” They are not mere representations or fantasies but genuine, tangible responses to the rhythms and textures of life.

Join us at BayArt to experience this evocative collection that, in its embrace of life’s unfolding events, invites viewers to find poetry in the present.
