Available Potential Guaranteed - Tudor Rhys Etchells

Opening: 25 Oct 2024, 18:00 - 21:00

25.10.2024 - 2.11.2024

A durational performance was enacted by Tudor Rhys Etchells to purchase passports in countries that sell them. The Golden Passport Scheme therefore becomes the stage for the performance of borders and citizenship. To document this he employs the photographic medium with its own cumbersome structures of viewing and representing acting as the best match for understanding the processes that construct the imagined norms of our society. Writer Sadia Pineda Hameed returns us to the very real conditions in which this scheme exists, displaying a new piece of writing commissioned in response to the work, Linked below.

Tudor Rhys Etchells will be in conversation with Charlotte Grayland, Assistant Curator of BayArt, on Saturday 2 November at 6pm. They will discuss his current show Available Potential Guaranteed and how it grew from his previous practice as a human rights lawyer. Through understanding the processes for making/performing the work they’ll touch upon his attempts at subverting the documentary photograph, institutional mobility and the ethics of doing so.
