Stage is a multi-artist installation and zine project curated by LLE .
The artworks all relate to the theme of ‘stage’.
The first installation was at Kingsgate Project Space, Kilburn, London.

The installation consists of two formats of artwork:
1. large backdrops.
2. small works on panels.

Participating artists were invited to produce both backdrops and small works on panels.

The backdrops are hung on the gallery walls and are at least 1 metre in height or width. They are large-scale drawings, paintings, textile and fabric hangings, and pre-existing items such as posters. The smaller works on wooden panels are hung on-top of the backdrops. The backdrop pieces are necessarily damaged during the installation, as holes are pierced through them to hang the smaller wooden panels on top. The installation is changed during the exhibition, with works being moved, added and removed.

LLE are an artist-led curatorial project with a focus on contemporary painting. LLE was founded by Liam O’Connor and Lara Davies, and is currently run by Liam O’Connor and James Moore.  LLE doesn’t represent any artists in a contractual fashion, instead, it hopes to foster ongoing relationships between artists. There is no definite space that LLE operates within. The people running it are based in Cardiff. The artists they work with are based all around the UK.

About us

BayArt is an artist-led gallery and studio complex located in Cardiff Bay, Wales. We facilitate the presentation of art exhibitions and events, as well as hosting artists in set residencies and associate studios. We aim to support the development of emerging to mid-career artists in Wales and further afield.

BayArt is currently managed by Liam O'Connor (Director/ Curator) and comprehensive team. View our full team here

Our History

The building has been an artist-led space since the 1970s, initially run by the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales (AADW), established in the mid-1970s. One of its goals was to find and manage affordable studios for artists. Over time, AADW managed several buildings across Wales, including two old, rundown warehouses in Cardiff. In 1980, AADW acquired 54b/c Bute Street, quickly becoming a successful studio building.

When AADW ceased operations, the artists working at 54b/c Bute Street formed a group called Butetown Artists to continue using the space. By the 1990s however, the building's condition had severely deteriorated, with water damage making some floors unusable. Cardiff City Council agreed to become part owners with AADW and funded some repair work during this time.

In 1997, the building was in critical condition, and Butetown Artists faced a choice: leave or find a solution. They chose to stay and reconstituted as a company limited by guarantee, aiming to transform the building into a complex comprising of a series of studios and a public art gallery. Ownership of the building was transferred to Butetown Artists by Cardiff City Council and the trustees of AADW on the condition that it remain a public arts facility. Butetown Artist Studios opened in 1999 and BayArt Gallery opened publicly in 2002, managed by studio member Philip Nicol with an education program operated by Maggie James.

In the same year, the company launched a capital project to repair and refurbish the building, completed in 2002. Funding came primarily from the ACW Lottery Fund, with additional contributions from Cardiff City Council, CADW, the Foundation for Sports and the Arts, and the now-disbanded Cardiff Bay Development Corporation.
